He actually hasn't played football since he was in high school. He was a wrestling champ in college (I can only assume heavyweight). Part of the problem with him not making the NFL imo, is that he was put in at DT where he is grossly undersized. But they probably put him there rather than DE because it probably takes much less cognition. I think the guy is a beast, though. Would I want to look like him? I wouldn't complain if I was, but probably not.

What's the pro and cons of Powercleaning?


I mean, It's like an extended deadlift but all you brolys only do deadlift. Is there a certain reason for this?

i'll go on a limb here and say because it's more form dependent thant just strength... and have you seen how shitty the forms of some deadlifts here? That's a clusterfuck in the works if i've ever seen one.

It also a very explosive lift...which helps those fast twitch muscle fibers. Oh yea, and nothing burns my traps more than 3 to 4 sets of hang cleans/power cleans.

christophers because there's no reason to use a movement that you cannot teach yourself. the vast majority of football/sports coaches in the US cannot properly teach most oly lifts, either. yea, a few of my friends said that I could just fake it for football testing but I actually want to learn it

I was lucky enough to have a coach in high school that actually did a bit of O-lifting and knew what he was doing. I did them for football/throwing but I see no reason to continue doing them now. Unless you're planning to olympic lift, in which case you should find a good training center/coach and learn from them.

whatever you do don't try to do it on your own, please please please have some experience person who knows what the fuck they are doing help you out...With the proper form you can get some fantastic explosive strength. With the wrong form repeated you can just injure yourself and not even get the best results. I just got done doing my oly day...snatches, clean and jerks weee

Juke I tried to powerclean about 115 on wednesday (my first time) and I got it up but I believe my form was really horrendous Its all in your form. My weight coach in highschool certainly wasn't an olympic trainer or competitor, but he seemed like he knew what he was doing. We would spend hours working on form w/ just the bar. Even so, my form as far as dropping underneath the weight still sucks. I drop half as far as I should. However, the rest of my form much better. Keeping the weight on the legs to keep from straining the upper back. Roll the bar to your shins and explode upward using your legs as hard as you can. Near the peak of this manuever shrug and pull the weight up as far as you can while trying to keep the weight moving only verticall. From here you drop beneath the weight as fast as possible while letting the bar come down on your delts as you raise your elbows as high as possible. From here, it is nothing but a front squat. I have only been doing hang cleans as of late. I guess the only reason I like them is because I am decent at them. I do 225lbs for 3 sets of 5. It has REALLY helped w/ my upper back developement.

my problem with cleans is that I don't feel like I have my elbows up high enough when I rack the bar onto my shoulders. does anyone have any good animated gifs to show proper form?

Conventional vs Sumo?

Conventional vs Sumo?


Should I be doing both or just stick with one?

powerlifting

so no advantages in switching around now and again?

i cant do conventional, my arms are too short or something

i think sumo is saposed to better mechanically, but it takes alot of practice to get the form down and such. I can pull prettty much the same with both.

I don't know. I'm 6'1, should conventional be easier? It seems like I can lift more with sumo. And it tires out a different part of my back -- am I crazy?

how close is everyone's legs on conventional? My feet are about 6 inches apart, and my arms are right outside my legs.

I put my feet a little less than shoulder width I dont know if I am doing them right or wrong though. I really regret joining the gym I did. And I am just doing conventional as i dont know how to do Sumo at all.

christophers take recorsd on both i pull conv, but i do sumo's for max effort day a lot but i always do speed deads with conv what bodily aspects would be more advantageous for a sumo lift? eg. is it generally suited better to tall guys?

I switch up. I still do some form of deadlift almost every squat/dead day, so to keep from getting stale I do all kinds of variations.

I usually do conventional when training but I've always been able to pull more with sumo.

On DL's I do conv. Seem to be able to get more drive that way, even if I have to pull it higher. On squats I do sumo because it feels more stable and easier on my knees

my football coaches always taught us to do sumo, so thats how i've been doin it since. today i tried conventional for the first time, and i absolutely loved it, much better than sumo.

I've done conventional when I first started and saw great gains when I switched to sumo, my weight lowered a bit, but it shot back up in no time. I think sumo helps prevent people from cheating. Now, I can do the same, if not more, with sumo than with conventional

I had a bicycle accident last night and dislocated my shoulder. It popped back in on its own. It hurts like a mofo and it feels like i tore up my rotator cuff. Any recommendations on physical therapy? Know how long it usually takes for something like this to heal?

I've had mine do that same thing many times. What i do is move my shoulder as little as possible for about a week or until it doesn't hurt when i move it. Then when i start doing presses i start out light and go up in weight as long as it doesn't hurt. I don't stretch it hard, i just get the muscles warmed up before I lift.

Power is much more important than strength when it comes to lineplay. I you could find 350 pounders who had good balance, conditioning, grip strength, and the ability to move explosively (power), then you would have something to work with. I played ball with a lot of guys that look like tarzan and play like jane.

If you trained the Westside lifters to be football players long enough I'm sure they'd have a chance, whereas if you just took them and lined them up against a Pro Bowl tackle they'd probably get raped.

Finally got back in the groove the last couple days of playing (I've played like 7 days in a row). I've got my swing back to where I need it to be and was simply smashing today. Up 4 times, had a triple, single, and two bombs (one was like 325 feet and one was like 385). If I keep playing consistently, I really wouldn't mind playing organized baseball again. I know I could play at a lot of lower division/ junior colleges but since I'm chilling at D1 OSU, I don't know whether they'd give me a chance. In any case I'm getting bigger/stronger as well so it shouldn't be more than 6 months before that 385 foot bomb turns into 400+. By the way, baseball= best sport ever. IBhaters

superbri007 playing ultimate frisbee all the time and doing a couple sessions of HIIT this past summer has made me soooo much faster. Frisbee is great for building speed, because its not boring to try and sprint after a frisbee that is far out of your reach. Its quite a goal, and having something to chase after makes you all that much faster without having to think about it. now I understand why they have the fake rabbits at dog tracks Goddamn I hate frisbee. Here are a list of tips that should help you out. First and foremost I always look at the muscles that are the most important for a particular sport and the muscles most likely to get injured. As a baseball player you must always work to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles. Since everything you do in baseball is in front of you so to speak, and you are always internally rotated you need to work the opposing muscle groups. Aside from the external rotators, you must focus on upper back, rhomboids, lower traps, etc. Lats are the most important upper body muscles involved in hitting and of course you should work on forearm strength. Rotational ab work is also of enormous benefit for baseball players. But here is something that you don't regularly hear: A baseball player usually bats either righty or lefty. That player swings in one direction an inordinate amount of times. This can lead to imbalances and problems. Back pain can result because of this. What I recommend is that baseball players swing the bat in the opposite direction as much as they can so as not to develop these kinds of problems. Also during the season, we will focus more of our rotational work in the opposite direction of the way they swing. You always hear about golfers getting back pain and this is the reason why. I think the reason why you don't hear as much about it in baseball is because baseball players tend to be quite a bit more muscular and in shape than golfers. However, there is always that risk, and if it doesn't rear it's head at the current time it will sometime down the road as you get older. As far as being "speed oriented'" goes, you have to focus on improving the strength of your posterior chain and work on running mechanics and multidirectional speed drills. Although the basepath dictates that you run in somewhat of a straigh line, the ability to rapidly change directions when running the bases or trying to steal, and also to react to where a ball is hit when you are playing defense is of the utmost importance. To improve your throwing power from the outfield, you have to do the same thing you have to do to improve your speed- strengthen your posterior chain and torso strenth. That is where all your power comes from, not your arm. -Jason Ferruggia

WTF Acupuncture...

WTF Acupuncture...


Whats up. Well, heres the story. Last week I tried to do box squatting, and I will still trying to get comfortable with it. After doing it with low weight, I put on 315, as that is my usual first set (after warming up a bit with 225) I come down tap the seat, and go up...next rep, i come down a bit too fast and end up sitting on the box, but i can't get it back up. So I rest for a moment, and end up straining myself and trying to adjust my footing to get a better position to stand up with the weight. I get it up. However, I end up feeling this sharp pain around my mid-lower back around the spine. CRAPP. my first squatting injury. Whatever, I made the mistake of doing another few sets with lighter weight. After I woke up, my back was killing me. Sharp pains whenever I moved the wrong way...I decided to take it easy for the next few days and not do anything that strains my back. So it was a week since the incident, last night. I was eager to try squatting again. Warmed up 225, no problem. put on 315, got it off the rack no problem, got ready to go down, and suddenly i felt a tiny shift in that same spot on my spine. Hurt like a betch. Racked the BB, and got off. Ended up doing Bench/Shoulder/Tri last night. Woke up, I could barely get out of bed. Didn't go to school, and I'm stranded at home. Now, my mom wants to take me to get acupuncture. WTF, I never believed in that oriental medicine crap. Acupuncture is supposed to release Chi? Uh, Chi only reminds me of Naruto and chakra or something. I dunno, I think they're going to put needles in my back and draw some blood. My mom got it done to her shoulder last week and she said it helped. BS. I would rather get x-rays done to make sure everything is okay. Either that, or I could wait another two weeks to make sure it heals up . I know I made some bad decisions in trying to put up that much weight with box squats initialy, and trying to squat again after a week of injury. But thats besides the point. What do you guys think of acupuncture? Is it legit? Does it work? I find it hard to believe that a few pokes with some long needles will help my spine heal. Also, do you guys have any other suggestions or comments? I'm ready for flames for my stupidity, thats understood. Any serious comments would help. ___________________________________________ Cliffs:Hurt my back/spine doing box squat a week ago, tried again last night, hurt it in the same spot. Now my mom is going to take me to get acupuncture. I dont believe in it. Thoughts? ____________________________________________ Plus, i frickin HATE needles. Some kinda mild phobia I guess.

Acupuncture basically made all my knee pain go away....the needles really aren't bad at all, they aren't thick like drug needles. Go for it...

dont be afraid of the needles. u wont feel a thing and u probably wont see them either if its on ur back so that shouldn't be a concern. its worth a shot i say. but your best bet to heal is probably just resting for a few weeks. i doubt an xray shows anything abnormal but get one of those two if you've got insurance just to be sure.

superbri007 I just got it today, and I love it, its relaxing. The best part about it is just laying there for 20 mins in a silent room stairing at the ceiling. The needles don't hurt really, unless they put it in a little too far geez. in 9th grade i had to get my immunizations for highschool and football. i nearly passed out after 2 shots...and this was after trying to pretend like i was all cool about it. at least i'm not diabetic like my aunt who takes 7 shots of insulin a day.

superbri007 dude, give it 2 weeks, rest yourself, stretch out, don't lift anything heavy, get some accupuncture, but also get chiropractic re-alignment first!. I go every monday for 10-30 mins or so. get my back aligned, then get accupuncture for sinus's and wherever I'm getting spasms from lifting, etc. wtf realignment? i hope nothing is out of place.

superbri007 then just don't look at the needles, and the likelihood of you passing out while lying on yoru stomach or back is 0 to none lol. try it out man, its really cool, and doesn't hurt a bit! the needles are so tiny you don't feel them really haha i was kinda exaggerating about my fear of needles. i'm not scared, i just dont wanna waste my time putting needles in my back when i dont know if it'll do anything. but the 9th grade thing is a true story.

Came back from it not too long ago. All he did was ask me what happened, and before i finished explaining he said "okay, get on the bed" (in korean) he started poking the general area with his fingers, made a fist and pushed extremely hard. f'in hurt. he's like "okay, its a dam" meaning a stress cramp? so he gets this pen like jig, and starts poking holes in my back...and doesn't stop. it must've been literally 100 holes. then he puts these glass cups on my back and uses this manual vacuum to pump out the air. so after waiting 10 minutes, he comes back and releases the cups and wipes away all the blood, which felt like it was a lot. result? i don't really feel any better. he says it will after a day or two, and he wants me to come back tomorrow. looks really ugly too. (you're not seeing things, my right lat is bigger than my left lat. )

This really blows. I was out playing football at a field behind the dorms on campus this past friday, and while I was out I hurt my knee all kinds of bad. I was running full speed and it buckled inside... Now I'm on crutches and can't workout indefinately, with only 3 weeks of classes left. I don't know how long I will be out, but last time this happened the doc said if it happened again I would likely need reconstructive surgury. I was making such good progress too... now I can't even make my way around the kitchen to eat well, so its only fatty takeout food for a while Sorry for the sad post... ibflamesforwhateverfuckingreason

Don't let an injury let your whole lifestyle go to shit. I did once, and that 30 pounds came pretty quickly. Just keep eating well, I'm sure you'll figure something out that you can do while your knee is taken care of.

i was in a similar boat..i had surgery on my knee 3.5weeks ago and it's still healing. it's still swollen and hurts..i sorta tripped down the stairs and my foot got stuck and stretched more than needed. it hurts like a motherfucker.

When i fucked up my knee i still went to the gym and did upper body stuff. I would for sure try to figure out how you can go still so you dont get out of shape.

whats a good mp3 player for training


ive been looking around a good mp3 player for running and lifting so whats a good one that is reliable hows the phillips nike one also about how many songs could i fit onto a 256mb one and or a 128 mb one

I got the RCA RD1071A from the mart of walls and I couldn't be happier. I think it holds like 128mb? It was only 80 bucks.

If you use rechargable plus AA battery it will last ~50 hours I think It's about 1.2" x 1.2" x .5"

At the place where I lift all the TVs are hooked up on fm reception so I if I am on a Sunday I can listen to the Nascar race or listen to football games in the fall time without having to run and check all the time. The only problem I have is the earplugs are horrible. I had another nice pair that I have been using.

I have the Nike Phillips 128mb one, got it two years ago for christmas. Once you ditch the gay armband and replace the headphones, it's great. The unit itself is awesome, small and very durable. Battery life is great. So sometimes youre bench pressing, some curls or some ab work or something of the like and you're near failure but not finished with your set. What's on your mind? What do you guys think of to keep you motivated and pushing yourself to squeeze out those last few reps?

gammalex If all hes taking is dbol alone he wont gain anything but 5lbs of water. He needs Dbol to jumpstart start a cycle of Test or Sustanon. He wont notice any real strength gains hell just look bloated. He will piss it out after he stops. theres 2 'fighters' in the gym and they seem to alternate days of coming in so as to hassle me to the fullest. Scenario 1: me and my friend are on incline bench...after every set i finish, 'fighter' #1 proceeds to walk over and tell me some bullshit i dont care about how he switched jiu jitsu gym from the black dragon school to the gracie school. he then proceeds to bring up 4,000 different submissions he just learned and prefaces every one with 'you're a wrestler...you know know this one right?' and then proceed to say 'here man youre too tall, i cant do it on you...get on your knees so i can do it' then he proceeds to put me in some dumbass sleeper hold variation nearly knocking me out so i have to tap his arm...he then gets this dumbass shitfaced grin on his face and says 'har har hardy har har pretty good hold eh?' as i think 'yeah man, next time youre in a fight and the guy is over 5' 5" just ask him politely to get on his knees so you can do your flawless submission repetuoire' this goes on between every set causing a 5-7 minute break between every fucking set (Reapeat paragraph Mon-Wed-Fri) Scenario 2: 'fighter' #2 takes a break from his incline situps and throwing punches at the top of every rep to take notice of my 'undefeated wrestler' shirt and waltz on over. meanwhile my friend and i are in the middle of deadlifting. he proceeds to butt in and say 'hey....are you a wrestler' (he obviously is very perceptive and has 40/30 vision or better because it has registered with him that i wear wrestling apparel every day to the gym). he then goes on to tell me about how he trains with a wrestler who was a two time state champ in west virginia where the west virginia state tournament consists of 2 parapolegic mutes with down syndrome. thinking im enthralled to hear this, he then goes on to tell me about every single principle of brazilian jiu jitsu and how i should do it. (meanwhile nearly 5 minutes have elapsed) he then takes an abrupt change in subject matter to the tv show 'the ultimate fighter' 'have you ever seen the ultimate fighter' 'no' (a lie in a futile attempt to stifle conversation...bad idea) 'ohhhhhhhh mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, well in that case (insert backround story, physical specs, fighting backround, and undergarmet preference of every single fighter on the ultimate fighter.....then after that he spends 5 more minutes telling me how the show was only supposed to give out 2 contracts at the finale but the fight was just so damn fucking a sweet they DUH DUH DUH gave out 3. (insert me shitting my pants out of suprise). then after that riveting 15 minute long sabbatical from lifting, he proceeds to walk back to the corner and throw some lightning fast jabs and ultra smooth kicks in the mirror (Reapeat paragraph Tues-Thu) note to self: never wear wrestling apparel again or get swamped by the 'everything we wear says "tapout" on it' crew

As an mma practitioner this UFC show has become a blessing on the one hand and the gayest thing on the other... Tons of people are showing up to train, all because of the show. They only last a month or less, they don't realize its seriously hard work. Then there are all the people who just watch the videos and pretend they can do something like it (like backyard wrestling). The exposure is good in terms of making the sport larger...but there are always bad things that come with expansion, like the douchebags you saw.

Lower devisions like IFC, GC, KOTC, SuperBrawl etc. have NO problem getting fighters. So dont expect there to be more shows just because more people want to fight, if they wanted more shows they would contract more fighters.

Real fighters wouldnt be focusing half their week in the "gym" Most explosive moves can't be replicated with your typical gym set. I don't think this sudden burst of popularity will last very long, give it a year or so.

Its pretty stupid to compare sport fighting systems to combat systems. Its like comparing stock cars and formula, they are two different things. quick question v.dl/squat


ideally, should your squat and d/l 1RM be the same/close to the same. or should the DL be significantly greater than your squat?

from the numbers ive seen, usually the DL is about 10-20% greater than the squat. but numbers dont scale down well to newbies, not saying you are, but like i DL 260ish and squat 200.

depends on your weight...lighter lifters tend to have their deadlift approach their squat weight but no matter what your squat should always be higher. The heavier you are the lower your deadlift will be in comparisson to your squat but i doubt thats something you need to worry about

I was deadlifting 405 and Squatting 340ish Ooops

if you plan on running or jogging to lose some fat, build cardio, or get into shape.......here is a great way to force yourself to do it. have a friend drive you a few miles away from your house. then have you friend drop you off, and take your cell phone if you have one. then...you pretty much have no choice but to run your ass home.
