shin splints

shin splints

I play basketball and I've had shin splints for a while now. I stretch, ice them, take anti-inflammitories, whatever. even after I rest for a week or two and they go away, they always come back after a couple more times of playing. what more can I do to treat the shin splints? what exercises/stretches can I do to prevent them?

do you have flat feet? don't ice them!!! if anything, you want to add some heat to relax the muscle!!! looks like this is a defintely a WARM UP issue! if it does get better when you rest and it happens when you start playing again, you defintely need to wark up properly.. warm up first, and stretch gently before you start your actual game... that helps.. im assuming you also started to play basketball... its not like you were playing basketball all these time and all of a sudden your get shin splits! eventually, you won't need to do stretching and the shin stretching goes away.. but ur legs have to get used to it first... a lot of my clients suffer from this once they start running, jogging, etc, etc.. and most of the time, its from not warming up properly or they have flat feet, etc, etc my suggestion to you is to properly warm up and gently take time to stretch b4.. if you give me detail info, i can give u more suggestion........

I get the same thing when running. What do you mean by flat feet?

maybe you need more cushioned shoes

look at your shoes, get some more cushioning inserts

is the pain on the front or inside part of the shin?

I saw some McDavid neoprene braces specifically for that. Maybe you shoudl try it out.

wood is the pain on the front or inside part of the shin? inside most of the time

I got some insoles for my old shoes, that didn't help, so I got new shoes. these ones are cushy and feel fine.

I always stretch my calves before playing. not sure what stretch I'd need to do to prevent the shin splints. MikeMurder I saw some McDavid neoprene braces specifically for that. Maybe you shoudl try it out. where could I get one? there's a GI Joes around my house that would probably have them, but I don't know of any places like that around school.

You gotta do these walk exercises. Get an area where you can walk like 20 feet back and forth. Do each one of these walks back and forth: walk on your heals walk on your tip toes walk on the inside of your feet walk on the outsides of your feet We used to do them in track practice all the time for shin splints. They work great. You might feel a little weird doing them though.

Davo Shin splints are on the bone, not any muscle. No. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...e:shin+splints

Davo Shin splints are on the bone, not any muscle. I decided to look it up:http://my.webmd.com/content/article/80/96441.htm "Treatment for shin splits includes rest, massage, ice, stretching, and strengthening." I guess I'll keep icing them

on the bone? Hell no.

raded inside most of the time this is most likely caused by overpronation (foot rolls inward). first thing you will want to do is get a shoe and/or orthotic that will support your arch and help keep your foot from rolling inward. do you have flat fleet or low arches?

Ilyusha No. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&oi=defmore&q=define:shin+splints Still considered a bone injury. Regardless, heat is not a good treatment.

I'm going to go out and look for some orthotics later today.

do it without shoes on

we used to do then with a mat on the floor too

rest and better shoes.

Carnifex Shin splints can be caused by the separation of your calf from the muscle in front, generally because the calf is much stronger, so walk on your heels or find something to strengthen the muscle of the shin. It could also be micro fractures but it doesn't sound like it in your case. Also, it could just be shitty shoes / lack of proper stretching and warm up. thank you! thats exactly what i mean on my original post... proper stretching, warm up, building necessary muscles, proper shoes, etc.. about the iceing... if you gonna do that, you have to alternate with heat as well, the more blood goes through the problem area, the better off you will be.. but since i really dont' know the exact detail of your problem and how and when it all started and goes away, etc.. so you figure out accordingly with the information below... generally:Ice treatment is most commonly used for acute injuries. If you have a recent injury (within the last 48 hours), where swelling is a problem, you should be using ice treatment. Ice packs can help minimize swelling around the injury. Decreasing swelling around an injury will help to control the pain. Ice treatments may also be used for chronic conditions, such as overuse injuries in athletes. In this case, ice the injured area after activity. Never ice a chronic injury before activity. Heat treatments should be used for chronic conditions to help relax and loosen tissues, and to stimulate blood flow to the area. Use heat treatments on chronic conditions, such as overuse injuries, before participating in activities. Do not use heat treatments after activity, and do not use heat after an acute injury. good luck!

I've been looking into calf/shin braces. are there specific ones I could wear while playing or could I use any of them while playing?

raded where could I get one? there's a GI Joes around my house that would probably have them, but I don't know of any places like that around school. any sports/atheltic store.

My 12 year old sister weights 155 lbs..

My 12 year old sister weights 155 lbs..

and i'm getting really concerned about her health. she doesnt exercise much, and spends too much time watching TV. she eats a lot of junk and snack food too. wot can i do to help? words dont seem to do much.. i can see her being obese if she carries on this way. by the way she's 5'6.

weighs what use apostrophes in your contractions That being said, there's not much you can do if she's not going to listen to you. More than likely your parents are contributing to her poor health. Talk to them and tell them to stop buying shit food. There was rarely any junk food around while I was growing up. No soda/pop, no fast food, no snacks. Parents bought lots of fruit and we had that as snacks. Occasionaly got treated with something once in a while. But I'm guessing there's junk food around all the time.

But I'm guessing there's junk food around all the time. Where are the parents? I commend you for caring and wanting to do something, but unless you are very close or are used to bossing her around, the parents have to do something. Like stop buying junk food and turn off the TV

my parents dont seem to be that concerned.. sometimes they'll yell at her for eating junk food and stop her.. but the next day its bak to normal. wot about exercising wise? wot is suitable for a 12 year old to do? i cud tag her along to my gym sometimes.. make her jog the treadmill or something?

If you can get her to the gym with you, then yeah have her do any kind of aerobic activities regularly. If you can pull her away from the tv for an hour a day she'll be fine. Go for bike rides with her, I was a bike riding freak growing up. You get tons of exercise and don't even realize it. I could ride for hours and hours and not even know it.

5'6" and 145lbs... She's not that overweight I don't think, she has some things men do not have (butt and boobs)...

Take a walk with her every once and a while or play a game that she likes to play. Telling her what to do and not to do wont help. You have to show her through things that she enjoys. But just get her outside and doin stuff. As for her diet, you have to get that junk food out of the house, ill assume taht your parents are overweight as well so that might be hard. But thats really gonna be the key to her bein healthy. Its great that you are concerned about her! There are to many people who just pass off obesity as being ok, especially in children, that can be devastating.

Da Hell's Oracle 5'6" and 145lbs... She's not that overweight I don't think, she has some things men do not have (butt and boobs)... She's 155, and yeah, that is pretty porky. My little sister (15) is 5'8 and about 110-115. That's pretty thin, but my girlfriend is 5'5 and 128, and would like to lose a few.

i think if she doesnt wanna exercise you'll just have to chase her around with a knife to make her run, and dont stop until she starts to sweat. After a while she'll just start running without any negative encouragement needed.

thanks for the input people. do fatter people tend to sweat more? cuz she sweats easily without even doing much work..

yes they sweat more easily

My GF is 5'6" and 113. At 155, she'd look pretty fat. My suggestion would be to try and get her interested in sports or other activities that will get her more active. Unlike boys, girls tend to not lose their "baby fat" when they hit high school. So you're right to be concerned for her now. Good luck.

Tell your parents to stop surrounding her with junk food. She's too lazy to be working, so I know she's not paying for it.

waylander Tell your parents to stop surrounding her with junk food. She's too lazy to be working, so I know she's not paying for it. and we have a wiener

she's 5'6 and 155? Damn for a 12 year old thats huge. I mean all around, tall and heavy. I can relate to this, my little bro is 12 and he's a tad overweight but he's active, he plays hockey. Actually when he's not playing hockey, he's on the computer or watching TV eating doritos and crap. Its my parents that put him on this diet. WHat can you do?

trancezj ah I'm sure gog will be availible as the drunk skinny guy. Gog's down with the fatties? I wonder if he will be my wingman. Wiiiingmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnn!

being her big brother and all, i think you should just eat all the junk food in the house yourself, so she doesnt have any junk food to eat.

HOLY SHIT!!!! tell her to start respecting her body, the sooner she starts the better. and tell your parents to stop buying that shit and leaving it around the house.

This topic is 13 months old. My sister's weight has increased since from 155lbs to 170lbs

don't worry she is just bulking

kingfaz This topic is 13 months old. My sister's weight has increased since from 155lbs to 170lbs You have a panoramic camera? is so pics? Reguardless, this is bordering neglect/child abuse at this point. Hide the fucking little debbies! Do something, seriously.

you cant tell a 12 year old shit about dieting. basically its your parents fault for putting shit food in the house. wanna know my suggestion? accept it. shes going to get fatter and you're right, she'll eventually be obese and it'll probably be right around freshman year in HS. theres nothing you can do about it because if you nag her to get her to exercise and eat right she'll just get pissed at you. what your parents need to do is lay down some fucking guidelines and buy good food. allow 1 hour of TV per day, she chooses the hour and this must be very restricted, same should go for computer. or she can choose between computer/tv. she must limit her calories and start exercising 4 - 5 times per week. i think if your parents cared at all about hers and their own diets theyd stop buying shitty food but its obvious they dont, so theres nothing you can do but just accept it and live your own life

Fitday...Calories Burned question.

Fitday...Calories Burned question.

Fitday is telling me that yesterday I burned 3297 calories broken down as follows: Basal: 1769 Lifestyle: 1086 Activities: 442 I have "seated work, some movement" as my 9-5 job routine. Does 3297 burned sound a bit excessive? Considering I worked out for an hour and walked 20 mins to and from work, and that only burned 442??

that does sound a bit excessive

lifestyle sounds really high, odd.

ryazbeck lifestyle sounds really high, odd. yeah...not sure what's gone wrong. I sit at a desk all day and look at computer screens.

fitday is all messed up. It says that you burn 0 calories no matter how long you sleep, when in fact it's something like 50 calories an hour... their food calories are pretty accurate though

I don't understand how the fatties lose weight with fitday. It has always seemed to me that they waaaay overestimate your basal and lifestyle calories.

Anyone tried NO2?

Anyone tried NO2?

anyone here tried NO2 yet? i just finished my first bottle of nitrixx by bsn , did see results in my vascularity. NO2 is sposed to do the same, wanted to know , for those taking NO2, hows it workin for you guys?

i heard it just allows more blood flow to your muscles causing you to only look bigger... i mean im not on it and it helps with more reps? so essentially just seems like a more expensive version of creatine...

save your money, dont buy it.

N02 is pretty much the best supplement ever made.

my workout buddy was on it for a while, it didnt seem to do anything

its pretty much like steroids but without the side effects of roids.

ryazbeck its pretty much like steroids but without the side effects of roids. lol...no

ryazbeck its pretty much like steroids but without the side effects of roids. We aren't talking about steel cut oats here...

joy division We aren't talking about steel cut oats here...

... Don't buy that shit. It doesn't do anything. NOTHING replaces hard work in the gym.

It does very little, money would be much better spent on creatine.

That shit is fucking stupid. You could spend the money on food and get way better gains.

first post is about no2....

Firstly I hope nobody on this forum buys NO products... But I hate it when I see idiots posting on other places asking for the best NO product, spending like 100$+ on them when they do nothing. did you miss that post?

from dictionary.com A colorless, poisonous gas, NO, produced as an intermediate during the manufacture of nitric acid from ammonia or atmospheric nitrogen and as a product of cellular metabolism. In the body, nitric oxide is involved in oxygen transport to the tissues, the transmission of nerve impulses, and other physiological activities. that is what nitric oxide is. that is what scuba divers get when they are underwater for too long. and if you want expanded veins as well go head and try it!

Is this bogus???

Is this bogus???

Total: 2747 Basal: 1665 61% Lifestyle: 1082 39% Activities: 0 0% its from fitday...it says i've already burnt 2747 cals today?? I don't think thats very accurate at all. I usually only eat around 2K-2,500 cals a day...so i should always be in a defecit and skinny...but i'm not. I don't get it.

christophers??? anoyone???

christophers paying attention to what calculators tell you you are expending per day is pretty stupid, they will never be accurate Calculators can be a good start point, but are never the end all be all. The only way to determine what you burn in a day is to actually monitor your intake and your weight loss/gain.

christophers paying attention to what calculators tell you you are expending per day is pretty stupid, they will never be accurate so how can i calcualte how many calories i'm expending every day so that i can keep track of wether or not i'm in a deficit?

ACURA TL-S Calculators can be a good start point, but are never the end all be all. The only way to determine what you burn in a day is to actually monitor your intake and your weight loss/gain. ah, i see. welli guess i'll stick with my planed cals for a week and go from there.

christophers you eat the same amount of calories for a week or two and if theres no weight loss you are not in a deficit, thus you lower it. ok thanks for answering my stupid noob question

Does lifting weights stunt your growth?

Does lifting weights stunt your growth?

Im just about to turn 17 in a few days, and ive been working out since 2 years ago. Im relatively strong for my weight, which is 140. I can bench 155 with 3/8 sets/reps, and i can do most other excersizes and pretty high level for my bodyweight. But im not the tallest guy, only about 5'8 or 5'9, and ive been wondering if my growth has been stunted because of lifting weights

yep, lifting weights has closed your growth plates!

no

Strenuous physical activity have been shown to retard vertical growth in children. This generally does not limit one's final physical height however, as those kids will likely experience growth spurts to catch up to their natural limit upon cessation of the strenuous activities. I think the ballpark is around a few hours of strenuous activity a day. This is compounded by a caloric defecit. So in conclusion, if your kids are lifting several hours a day, feed them lots of food and give them a few months off every couple years. If you treat your kids like Richard Sandrak little hercules, they may end up as tall as him. (but it's not too late for richard yet since he still has lots of time to catch up.)

damn i've mustve been working out since i was 11 cause im 5'6"

fitday question

There is a section where you can put in stupid things like brushing teeth...putting on make up, etc. All I am doing is putting in my workout..like weight lifting and cycling. Calories Burned Today source cals % total Total:3234 Basal:1665 51%Lifestyle:1015 31% Activities:555 17% that's what i have so far. 3234 cals burned! that's alot. basal as 1665...I burn 1665 calories in my sleep?

No you body performs a whole lot of mechanical processes to keep you alive. This takes energy, a lot of energy in fact. I wouldnt bother inputing the piddly crap. Stick to workouts and basal.

Man Boobs How to reduce naturally?

Man Boobs How to reduce naturally?

I am 16 and i am pretty big, I am like 1.85 m tall and probably over 120kg (last time i checked my weight i was 80kg but i think i was 12) yea 80kg 12 year old D:. i have man boobs (im very ashamed of it). I used to play sports when i was younger(a lot younger). I don't know why i put off going to the gym for a long time, but i have decided to go (My brother is going to pay for me because hes starting to go). Im the only fat person in my family, my brothers are (in my opinion) very fit, but i probably ate a lot more then them growing up. What kinda exercises do you think i should do. i have a big belly. I want to get rid of my belly and man boobs. Im open to all suggestions. (please explain how to do exercises).

I haven't ever been on a diet, i buy energy drinks every time i go to the shopping centers. Sometimes i buy a 2.25litre of fizzy drink (coke or sprite etc..) and it will be gone very quickly. My friends have inspired me to get into shape, because when ever im with them all they talk about is how much they can bench and how big their muscles are, but im too embarrased to join in because im full on lard. Can u give me a diet that would help me alot with my fat problem. 2 years ago i used to walk to and from school, should i start back up? How much time a day/week should i be exercising for the actual exercise to be effective. Any help is good help.
