Had a fascinating lecture today in Nutrition of Aging class...


We talked about calorie restriction and it's relation to life span. Apparently there are monkeys and mice on restricted calorie diets that live 2-4x longer than regular monkeys. Low cal/high nutrient diet drastically slow down the aging process, but the reasons are unknown. I suggested to my teacher it was because hormones like testosterone and IGF are lower in a caloric deficit, and she didn't even know that happened. You guys heard anything about it? Any opinions, reasons why it exists? I found it a pretty interesting lecture whereas I usually fall asleep in class.

Is it the same study that had monkeys and mice eat only every other day?

similarly why vegans/vegitarians tend to live longer, they consume less calories.

I actually heard about this a year or two ago, but it was people not mice who were experimenting on themselves. Quite frankly, they may live longer but they sounded a bit depressed about having to eat so little. Perhaps less calories=slower metabolism=less work on internal organs and such=longer life?

Is it any good? I am currently taking it. Its some blue berry flavor. It really tastes good. I just take it an hour after working out. It says I should be getting about 40g of protein. Should I take more throughout the day? Thanks for any info.

I hate GNC. online store = your friend. best tasting protein IMO is ProLab's Advanced Whey... tastes like Chocolate cotton candy and only has 3g's of carbs, only 25g's per scoop, tho and its usually cheap... the Vitamin Shoppe by my house had 5lbs for 26 bucks... bodybuilding.com's store is selling a 2lb jug for 18 right now. do some research on the net, there are so many protein companies/flavors/options out there. trail and error

best times to take are in the morning, since your body is depleted, and after your workout. if the protein is an isolate it will release throughout the day and you can take your whole server in the morning, then one after your workout. if it isnt an isolate you might want to take the servings in a broken up manner. i think the average person can make use of about 25g of protein per hour.

so I drink my shakes usually by mixing them with a spoon, I've thrown up while drinking shakes but I sitll do it to tuff it out, they taste like shit, clunky, etc well today I tried a blender...holy shit, went down smooth and it was good

My shaker bottle went to shit and my roomate had one of these. Alot easier and quicker clean up than a blender. I think I'll just use it from now on.

meh. i have a nalgene bottle. get water from the refrigerator dispenser, measure to 12oz on the side markings, 2 scoops on whey, close, shake, chug, rinse, done. easy enough for me.

I know it's a topic here every day but i wanted to get some advice. I'm doing good with my cut but would like to do better. :impatient: I think i have my diet done pretty well. im getting 2000-2500 cal a day 200-300g protein and about 70%/30% carbs/fat. I lift MWTF and 7 days befor i hit the same groop cardio on that days off and nothing on sunday, i also cheat for sunday dinners. is the stack going to help me alot of am i doing enough as is? again im happy with the results but if the stack is going to speed it up considerably ill try it. what do ya guys think? clifffs for the lazy: my diet/workout is good, is the stack worth it?

im saying if im getting my 2-3 pounds a week, is this going to increase that by any real amount?

Neo22 I think you need more fats in your diet. Too much protein. he's right, this will be an unsuccessful cut without dietary changes. you may find that you end up with less lbm/fat mass. according to your fitday log, your ratios are 10%fat, 27%carb, and 63% protein. if you're adding protein powder on top of that, the ratios are more skewed with way too much protein. you need more carbs and fat if you want to lose fat instead of muscle. even with that much protein, your body will be burning it as the primary fuel instead of releasing fat to burn.

i think you're asking for low blood sugar problems and i'd be surprised if you can maintain your current lbm thru this cut with the thermo

I'd go for between 60-80g of fat daily. YOU need fat when you are cutting. It should be around 25% of your intake.

BrickTamland i started it today im pretty fucking jittery from the last 200mg of caffeine but i'm supposed to take another 200mg with ephedrine now give it a few days. my first day i was cracked out. now i can feel the energy, but i dont feel the sides at all.

I'm trying to eat real clean right now and was wondering how bad jerky is for you. I know its a great source of protein, but how loaded with sodium is it? Is it somthing I can incoropate into my diet every day? or a treat? Also, over at www.smokedmeats.com where I order, they have salmon jerky, any dietary info on that?

Usually a lot of sodium. Look up the nutritional info.

I'm no jerky-ologist but I believe smoked jerky has less sodium than your traditional cured jerky.

Beef jerky is an awesome snack. The salmon jerky probably has similar nutrition content, maybe a tiny bit less fat (beef jerky doesn't have much to begin with).

Just get a dehydrater and make your own. Tastes alot better and probably ALOT better for you.

I just started Bas Rutten's Mixed Martial Arts work out and it is amazing. I want my workouts to be a challenge everytime, and this one is. When watching the instructional DVD it didn't seem like it would kill me as much as it did. I suggest you all check it out, www.basrutten.tv

Aluyminyum they make you do pretty hard stuff for martial arts. this week just to warm up it was holding a med ball over your head and then hopping in a squat about 60ft. everyone was dead by 30ft and we've done this lots of times before todays training: warm up/stretch/etc. 14 rounds- 3 minutes each, 15 seconds in between Rounds 1-2 = shadow boxing Rounds 3-6 = bag work Rounds 7-10 = pad work Round 11 = sprints w/stepping Round 12 = sprints w/shuffleing Round 13 = jump rope w/knee ups Round 14 = Jump rope w/single leg (5 on each leg) Then 45 minute non-stop "road work" consisting of: Jogging, reverse jogging, sprinting, shuffle in/outward, sidestep in/outward, bear crawls, crab walks, toe ins, toe outs, hops (feet together), zig-zag inward/outward all around the room, never stopping - clockwise then counter clockwise... then jog to the center and 15 more minutes of: Front/back, side to side, switch hips, quick steps, dive bombers, mountain climbers, hops (in place). My legs hurt

velamint you should start a training log http://forums.offtopic.com/forumdisp...ysprune=&f=147 Kind of impossible to recreate it in a thread on account of our trainer tells us when to do things, its always timed...also alot of the lifts/movements require proper form that you don't want to attempt without being shown but... for example the strength training day is all oly lifts with special weights (one handed); snatch/press/cleans/etc. etc....then there are things like slaloms and turkish getups which have multiple steps to them and are really hard to explain.

I wish there was an mma gym around here...although when I'm not injured any more I'd like to start taking bjj and boxing

yeah I've never seen any place that was so serious about conditioning. Classes are at least 3 hours long, 3 times a week. It takes lots of dedication

illmatix Damn! That's a pretty serious routine. How long have you been training? I'm just now making the switch from boxing to MMA. I trained for over a year at the same place back in 2003-2004. I just started up again in january of this year after taking time off for school/work/personal deals. Yeah soreness pretty much rocks me if I don't get proper sleep and nutrition- the trainer makes us go to a nutrition class and we have to set up our own diet. Right now I'm eating ~380g carbs, ~230g protein and ~67g fats.

Ab help w/newcomer

Ive just recently started lifting and brought back my running routine (going on 3 weeks of progress now). I was dormant from the health/fitness routine for about 2 years. Im naturally predisposed to being an athletically built guy, but it seems that even though im down to 166lbs, I cant get my abs back into the shape they once were. Here is a pic of what they look like now. They can be more defined if I flex, but in thier natural state they seem a bit flabby. Im eating about 3k cal per day, working out mildly and downing about 150g of protein. Im not looking to gain alot of muscle mass, but some gains are good. I havent been cutting at all. Is there a good way to get larger abs instead of just losing the weight around them to show them more? On to the pics number 1 show the place that has some def. and good strength (natrual state in pics) Number 2 show area that is flabby and soft. No matter how much I run or how many forms of situps I do, I cant get muscel to form there. Any thoughts?

No need to get hostile. Im already getting everything else pretty much right in that guide (sans a few grams of protein)

Just wanted some advice, not someone telling me that its not working. I have a hard time beleiving things that I read on the net and just wanted some informed suggestions.

vettedude is pretty much right. the bottom line here is nothing about your abs, its about the layer of fat over them. now what you knwo you need to do is lose fat, and if you look on the main page it says "Sticky: want to lose fat? L I F T W E I G H T S" and "Sticky: Basic Newb Guide to Fat Loss" so obviously thats where you'd look. if you actually read it you'd know it has everything you need to know and you wouldnt be making this thread

I am currently 162 lbs about 6'1" and fed up with it. So I am fully commited to put some weight on. I have tried before, I lifted for 8 months really hard, I got stronger, but only a couple pounds bigger, I'm hoping because I never really added to my diet. So here is what I'm starting on now: Morning:25g protien shake 25g can of chicken breast Oatmeal or cream of wheat, a bagel, some fruit, whatever the caffeteria has Lunch:Whatever school is serving, usually a decent meal, hamurger or something. Dinner:Again whatever school is serving, pasta, pizza, chicken, whatever it is I can eat a lot of it. 50g protien shake Obviously I will be lifting throughout the week, I feel I have a good workout that gets my full upper body and some legs throughout the week. I am not worried about putting on fat, in fact I would welcome a few % more body fat. So if anyone has anymore suggestions on what I should be doing that would be great. Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure I get more than 2,000 a day. I eat tons for dinner, but thats really the only time I can eat till I can't eat anymore.

If you're a hardgainer you may have to take up to 4000-7000 calories a day, depends on your metabolism, start your calories out at 3500-4000 and eat that amount for a week and see if you gain any weight, if you dont, add another 500 everyday for another week and repeat the process until you start gaining, it ain't rocket surgery

35hrs of class? How? How many credits is that? You are going to need to eat a lot more than that. Buy canned foods and keep your room stocked. If you want it bad enough you will make it work.

You can get a moderate-sized Foreman Grill for around $10-$15 that will easily fit anywhere in your dorm. You can cook your shit on your computer desk if you want to. As for no room for a fridge, just how small is your dorm? Pics? IMO that would be most beneficial for you if you could eat in your dorm. It'd be better than the crap they serve at the cafeteria. Probably cheaper, too, but I don't really know.

I just got my new batch of CEE from 1Fast and this one tastes A LOT different. My last batch was REALLY salty, this batch is REALLY bitter. Two totally different tastes. Both still taste like shit. Anyone else experience this also?

Yup our new material is the shit. They are perfecting the process of making this stuff, finally. That begins to happen when you order enormous amounts (we source for others as well). We explained to them how ass tasting the first batches were and that we had to fix that in order to continue growth

I'm 5'10 130ish but i've lost 20 pounds since the summer. I can't put on weight. My waist is size 28 and my figure is enviable by some females. I've tried supplements and they have worked but i'm now somewhat intolerant to milk, so that rules out my old stash. Is it something to do with my weird metabolism? I'm 23, Asian, everyone in my family is not overweight. My diet has a decent amount of carbs as we rotate western/eastern style meals on a daily basis. I can binge eat like a mad man and gain next to nothing. See nutrition specialist?

When I was in HS (all 4 years) I weighed a steady 110 pounds. I HATED it, I was painfully skinny and it actually would get me into trouble (they thought I had an eating disorder ) I tried everything, even that weight gainer powder drink and drinking ensure Unfortunately I never managed to gain any weight by these methods. I eventually gained weight when I was married and got knocked up My metabolism just finally slowed down. (funny thing is, that's how I knew i was preg- I gained 10 pounds in the first month and it tipped me off that something was going on) I honestly worried that I had a mild thyroid disorder and my doctor had even suggested it at one time. I certainly hope this isn't the case but you may want to have it looked into. Good luck and don't get knocked up!

I've also had a very tough time gaining weight. fOr while I thought if I just took steroids I could gain. But really it just takes willpower to be dedicated. I eat till I am completely full. wait an hour or something then lift heavy. WAit a day or two...do again. In the meantime I take Enlarge2 shakes in between meals, meal replacement shakes as snacks, and I eat huge portions. when you get that totally stuffed feeling your metabolism actually slows down a bit. Mine is always through the roof. Try to eat a few big meals instead of many small meals. many small meals keeps your metabo up. And do less reps, more weight for muscle gain. Im fairly new to lifting but IVe found that this method really helps me to gain weight. My jeans are almost too tight to wear now, which is crazy, a few months ago they would fall off me.

If you're lifting to gain muscle, your diet should contain: 59% Carbs, 28% fats, and 13% proteins. KetchupKing is pretty much correct. Also, try drinking half a gallon of whole milk per day. (I have heard GREAT things from this.)

Everyone rips on the shakers... I use them all the time. If you take the rubber seal out and be sure to screw the top on right they don't leak at all. I use 6 of them this way and none of them leak.

just screw on extra tight, always works for me

took me about 15 minutes to get the rubber seal back in mine, since then no problems... /shrug.

am i the only one that figured out u can mix whey easily with a wire wisk in a normal cup? i hate washing shaker cups or the blender so if im at home thats what i do. works like a charm.

Vitamin world brand is cheap and tastes good. 17g/scoop i do two scoops.

I use ISOXP Chocolate formula, 45g protein/50g scoop, tastes great, average price for protein in my city.

look into optimum nutrition its pretty much the preferred brand on here because it is cheap and has a fair amount of protein per serving 23g if I'm not mistaken. I have the 10lb bag right now

although impressive, i think the prob is more at the beginning of the bench.. you didnt have a clean start, so that may have caused the arm wobble. like pur said, drive through it. start controlled then blast, not the other way also should your arms be that angled? id think a bit more in line with shoulders, but im not sure about that.. :/

AngryGuy It'd be funny if she told you to move over and proceeded to rep 400. what class is it? heh funny you ask. at Cal we have a program called Decal, which stands for democratic education at Cal, and basically undergraduates can teach interest-specific classes to other undergrads for a non-letter grades. In the squat vid clip, the other two guys you see including myself are facilitators of the course. i'm the head facilitator (instructor). i also named the course after this forum: Fitness & Nutrition. I figure if i have an opportunity pass on the knowledge of what I've acquired throught my experience, this forum, my classes, and help them out, i should make the most of it. everytime i hit the gym i see guys who looked like me when i first started lifting, and it's rewarding for me to duplicate my results in another individual. i taught this class last semester which was really fun. but this semester, for one reason or another, there's such a disparity in male:female enrollment its krazy.

What would you do? Take a few protein shakes before? I know im going to be drunk tonight

protein shake with 4 tablespoons of olive oil in it, and drink another protein shake after you drink and like 3 glasses of water. you'll be super duper a-okay

just mix 12oz beer with 1 scoop of whey and enjoy x 10 when i get drunk i remember to eat something, usually some cottage cheese or some sort of protien before i pass out, and drink one big glass of water and take another to bed with me.

Lots of water while drinking and lots more right before bed. Take 2 advil before you hit the sack as well. One of my most successful drinking nights happened when I was about 18 - I had 2 big macs right before my friend's party, and drank like a fucking beast and felt smooth all night (no crazy spikes and dips in drunkedness) and felt great in the morning. So drink lots of water and eat more than you normally do before the party and you're all set.

Children's Ped-A-Lite. Best stuff ever created for eliminating hangovers. Drink some before going to bed/passing out. Wake up and have some more.

im not worried about hangovers....more about the nutrition aspect... maybe i should eat less for dinner, that way i can have more cals when i drink?

1 beer is barely more alcohol than a shot = 100 - 150 cals 1 shot of liquor is barely less alcohol than a beer = 70cals, 0carbs,0fat,0protein. Alcohol is its own calorie.

I am always fine to work out the day after I drink. Just eat good and drink lots of water and you are perfectly fine.

As an experience alcoholic take my advice- protein slows the synthesis of alcohol, so eat that before you start drinking (usually a bunch of tuna or a steak or some chicken wtfever...). Before you go to bed, and if you are really drunk this can be hard to do, but try to get 4-5-6 glasses of water pounded. Thats all there is too it, if you don't drink the water you are fucked. Eating tons of bread won't soak it up or anything so don't bother. Another thing I found that helps out is to have pre-made healthy foods out for when you get the munchies, with your inhibitions down its easy to want to go grab fast food or something shitty...you will regret it the next day and feel like a fat ass. Just make something and put it in the fridge so later when you are stumbling around it will seem like a burried treasure and you can devour it

alcohol is 7 calories per gram, but the body doesnt use it for exercise. It's also a diuretic. Being drunk won't do anything do your muscles, just factor in the calories, and make sure you drink water and burn the Cals. eat less today so you are more easily affected by the alch...then eat more tomorrow after you've pissed it out.
