yet another cottage cheese question...

yet another cottage cheese question...

Ok, I've done the searches and you guys say when to eat it and what to eat it with, but I didn't really hear anything about how much to eat. I'm about 5'9" 160lbs. I don't care if I lose weight or not (if anything I'd like to gain 5-10 pounds), I'm just using it for the protein value, because I know now that I'm not taking whey anymore, I could use it. Anyway, I'm eating about a-cup-and-a-half of fat-free cottage cheese mixed with half a cup of fat-free strawberry yogurt before I sleep. Does that sound right to you guys?

That's about 50 grams of protein but I can't tell you any more than that

2 cups post workout 1 cup before bed well, thats what I do

If you hope to gain 10lbs, but don't care if you lose weight, you don't need to be worrying about the protein value in cottage cheese. Figure out your goals!

KDubb 2 cups post workout 1 cup before bed well, thats what I do Thanks. This sounds pretty reasonable. I gotta start splitting up my meals too. I've been eating 2 large meals per day when I could easily split that into 4 smaller ones without much trouble.

Socrates If you hope to gain 10lbs, but don't care if you lose weight, you don't need to be worrying about the protein value in cottage cheese. Figure out your goals! my goal is to put on a few pounds of muscle without gaining any fat. I've decided to restructure my workout now that my lifestyle's going to be changing. At the same time I want to target certain areas and add more emphasis to my legs (which is where I'd like to gain the weight if possible), by sacrificing some of my upper body lifts. I figure as long as my workout's going to be changing, I should do some tweaking to my diet too while I'm at it. I know for a fact that I'm probably not getting enough protein now that I'm not supplementing anymore. Right now is mostly experimentation to figure out what works best. I've had good results with Myoplex but got off about 6 months ago. I'm going to start again soon, but like I said, I'm experimenting.

cedric my goal is to put on a few pounds of muscle without gaining any fat. buy some protien and lift, thats all you really need to do

Before bed is best; cottage cheese contains casein protein, which digests very slowly and will prevent your body from going catabolic during the night. But I would take some whey after working out; post workout you want fast-digesting protein that will be quickly absorbed. Of course, cottage cheese after workout or any other time is great; just saying you'll probably want to add in some whey too.

KDubb 2 cups post workout 1 cup before bed well, thats what I do Doing that after working out is NOT smart. YOU want whey after a workout. NOT casein.

Neo22 Doing that after working out is NOT smart. YOU want whey after a workout. NOT casein. i do both

KDubb buy some protien and lift, thats all you really need to do that's what I've been doing for the past 8 years, but I figured I'd try the cottage cheese just because you guys seem to swear by it. Up until college I was really only lifting for strength. Now I'm mostly doing it to maintain muscle. I've seen too many of my friends go down hill because of college and I'm not about to let that happen to me. Like I said, the myoplex was the best protein I've tried out, and I'm going to get back on it ASAP. (btw, do you guys know anywhere I can get it cheaper than muscledepot.com?) Thanks for the advice.

Can someone say how long it takes to usually gain like 10 lbs of LBM? I can't remember.

Socrates That will take a really long time. Can someone say how long it takes to usually gain like 10 lbs of LBM? I can't remember. I'm not in any kind of rush. It's a longterm goal. I've been 160 for the past 6 years and I figure 165-170 is a good maintainable weight for me to be at.

low carb for 3 weeks progress

low carb for 3 weeks progress

I've been doing low carb <15g per day for 3 weeks now. I dont seem to have lost much muscle. about 1/4 inch on my bicep flexed. Gone down from 213 to 203. I'm 6'1.5" the darker looking pictures are from 2 months ago.

its just the lighting, all you lost was muscle and water.

dirtysouthboy its just the lighting, all you lost was muscle and water. sadly..

Ilyusha sadly.. i was being sarcastic. he is my work out partner.

start eating carbs again

dirtysouthboy i was being sarcastic. he is my work out partner.

Ilyusha Lets see some pics of your progress.

yeah, you are losing weight too fast. Are you any kind of androgen right now?

dirtysouthboy Lets see some pics of your progress. I hate people like you. Shut the fuck up please.

All you ever do is talk shit about everyone else. But you dont have shit to show. I've seen a few pics of you and you're pretty much fat and well, not much to look at. Dirtysouthboy said that because he knew some jealous douche like you would talk shit.

Mass yeah, you are losing weight too fast. Are you any kind of androgen right now? No androgen. I can lose weight really fucking fast, its kinda weird. Im working on getting my carb intake back up. I've eaten about 30g a day for the past couple days. Moving up and then im thinking gonna go back to low carb for a couple weeks. I wanna get really cut up for summer.

Maybe up the carbs , but then also up the cardio as well. I think you may like that a lil better than straight up no carbs.

I dont need to do cardio honestly. I'm eating around 10 - 15g a day of carbs. How many carbs per day are recommending that I eat?

Sorry chris, i dont want to talk shit, but ilyusha has to... ya know.

but im trying to lose fat. im doing the "atkins" diet. basically an experiment. i experiment with stupid temp diets sometimes for fun. but why do you say i should do 60-80, thats not really "low carb"

I would chime in, but there's no point as it will probably start another arguement btw, nice job - good improvement in 3 weeks. Delts look bigger overall

ryazbeck All you ever do is talk shit about everyone else. But you dont have shit to show. I've seen a few pics of you and you're pretty much fat and well, not much to look at. Dirtysouthboy said that because he knew some jealous douche like you would talk shit. I don't think I have ever knocked someone's progress without pointing out something positive. Please take your wannabe e-thug shit talking somewhere else. The lighting IS different and the way the shadows play DO make a difference, so don't get all butthurt about your water loss. Oh, and as far as my progress goes, I think I've made leaps and bounds in the strength department over the last 7 months. I wasn't working out to lose weight for most of that time period (aka I wasn't actively cutting) so of course I'll still be fat. Check back with me in 3 months, tough guy.

you look more defined in the current pics.....good job, i always thought on limiting my carbs, but it wont happen

If youre worried about carbs that much why dont you just alter you macronutrient ratios so its more like 40x40x20? That should keep your carbs pretty low but you'll probably have more energy for working out and such.

yeah maybe i'll take my carb intake up to like 50 and leave it there

If I ever see you at the rec, I'll be sure to kick you in the nuts............

Lighting definitely making a huge difference but on the same note, your progress is good for your goal.

christophers hey douchebags, keep the shit to a minimum or i'll lock this thread. How you doin' you sexy ball of fat?

christophers so? how is it not low carb.. anything under 100g/carbs day is medically defined as ketosis. it will help performance and not fuck with fat loss so why not? more performance = more cals used = more muscle resention = more fat loss Really, 100g will still put you into ketosis? BTW, I like my diet better, it is called eat whatever the hell I want as long as I get enough protein and below maintenance calories. For example, tonight was bike night at hooters and all you can eat naked wings are yummy.

For example, tonight was bike night at hooters and all you can eat naked wings are yummy. yeah because i picked up a quick reference atkins book and it says to start around 15g for a few weeks then move up to 25, 35, 45 etc until you're eating 90 - 120g. or go up to 45g then back down to 15g and do it again if you want to keep losing weight and nice, sure wish there was a hooters near by, i love that trashy place.

...discuss. I'm more curious how everyone feels about it for us tall lanky lifters. And please, if you don't know what the fuck you're talking about and can't back up what you say with more than just meathead evidence, then don't post.

i've always heard dont let the knees go more than about 1" beyond your toes. it works for me

Was kind of funny that article was on t-nation just as this thread is made. Good article though.

christophers, can I please get a link to that article? This post is an attempt to get an annoying "phys-ed major" (no I'm not joking, he went to college to be a gym teacher) that I went to high school with off my back. He just started going to my gym, and feels the need to critique my every move. I want to arrive on leg day this Thursday with some paperwork in case he intends to critique my squat, even though he admitted to me this morning while leg pressing that he hasn't worked legs in over a year.

great great writeup. after yrs of squatting bb style, ive decided to try pl style, ala legs out. wow. i have to give credit to pls. they are more flexible than you would assume. there is no way my hips thought they were meant to move that way! lol form, and proper lower back and hip development are important though, hence the reason for the suppl excercises like pull throughs or ghrs to help aid in this motion.

D-GUy Was kind of funny that article was on t-nation just as this thread is made. Good article though. Ah, nevermind. I did go there and ran a search, but it's broken and I didn't even check the new articles. Thanks!

Good work Christophers -- very informative.

diddo.

i'm gay :kieke:

they go slightly beyond if your squatting properly, theres no real way otherwise. But too far is bad but you will know it if you do anyway. Try and squat where you feel the most comfortable, width, stance, etc. I tend to squat narrow and lean back and sit with weight more. Arch my back alittle, place the bar low on my traps, and on the way up i tend to thurst my hips forward to get the squeeze. I have tried all sorts of stances and this is what i like the best. Plus it caused the most growth for me. Also powerlifting style tends to widen the waist more and fatten the ass as well. This isnt a study though, just what i have learned for myself over the years

I think as you train the hammies you will be less like B when trying to keep your knees back. I know when I first started squating I would have to focus on not falling backwards when keeping my knees back, but now it is second nature. Although like everyone else said, I still move them a little in front of the toes.

reassessing my goals

reassessing my goals

ok, im about to start back hard again, i took about 4 weeks off(had been at it for about 10 months). I'm not goin to lie and say i was goin about it the right way, b/c i wasnt. but i want to start it off right this time. i had a 3-day split, chest/bi, back/tri, shoulders ibleghaters. i leave legs to cardio(swimming and running) lets take back/tri for example lat pulldown(bar) lat pulldown(singles) bent-over row(bar) bent-over row(db) ... you get the picture i do this b/c if i dont, i dont feel like i hit it hard enough. i do5 or six routines for back, and two or three for tri. am i doin it ok or should i find different/more routines. the problem with this is that i cant switch it up like should(not enough options) or should i just cut my routine down a lil. i only stay at the gym for about 1:20. not including cardio(i do that at another time)

BeanesCivic i want to start it off right this time. BeanesCivic i leave legs to cardio make up your mind.

evi1eddie make up your mind. Word. Either do legs properly or stop wasting everyone's time, brohammer. This isn't a fucking group effort here, padre, this is you and the fucking weights and your time and dedication. Do it right or stay home and swim laps in the bathtub for legs. Shit.

Anyone taking glucosamine?

Anyone taking glucosamine?

How much do you take? Im doing 1500mg a day and its doing some amazing stuff for my knee. I have been on it for a week and the pain Ive had for 8 months nearly gone.

like 3000mg with chondroitin(sp) and msm also hyaluronic acid

I need to start taking it again, that stuff works miracles on sore joints.

what brands do you guys reccomend that bulk nutrition carries?

I take 5-10g after workouts but not at any other time. I may get more through the foods I eat but I'm not 100% sure about that.

eddscat I take 5-10g after workouts but not at any other time. I may get more through the foods I eat but I'm not 100% sure about that. i think you mean glutamine

PurEvl i think you mean glutamine Oh shit yeah

PurEvl like 3000mg with chondroitin(sp) and msm also hyaluronic acid What brand do you take and where do you get it?

http://www.wholesalesupplementstore....onic-acid.html http://www.wholesalesupplementstore....ucosamine.html

glucosamine & chondroitin is everywhere... easier to get that than whey for most people. Not sure about the hy- acid

i used to take it for my knees but i think i left it at home when i came to college i dont play tennis anymore so theres less stress on them anyway

Has anyone got any good articles on how glucosamine "works"

I took it awhile ago and it worked very good. Right now I'm taking this http://www.iherb.com/gluc5.html

You see my gripe is this, and for this I will use damage of articular cartliage as my example, caused by osteoarthitis or some kind of injury. Articular cartliage when damaged has very limited self repair mechanisms, why is this? Because simply they dont have veins, they are avascular, so I'm interested how the glucosamine goes to repair the cartliage

I take some glucosamine.

PurEvl like 3000mg with chondroitin(sp) and msm also hyaluronic acid that's a nice sized dose

Soularis I took it awhile ago and it worked very good. Right now I'm taking this http://www.iherb.com/gluc5.html source naturals is good shit, I like their products

superbri007 Pur just eats entire Great White Sharks for their cartilage to support joint health, then makes those cocktail hotdogs with baby seals and pizza dough

Yeah I take the stuff Costco sells.

buffbronzenbtchn Yeah I take the stuff Costco sells. same here

superbri007 Pur just eats entire Great White Sharks for their cartilage to support joint health, then makes those cocktail hotdogs with baby seals and pizza dough No doubt, natural chondroiton at its finest; and instead of potato chips, he just munches on oyster shells for the glucosamine. That's a man among men, I tell you.

Just picked up some tonight. Glucosamine/Chondroitin. Hopefully it'll help.
