Eating before you sleep? Is it actually bad?

Eating before you sleep? Is it actually bad?

I've always thought that you shouldn't eat before you sleep as your body won't use the food and you'll just put the food on as fat.. However, I read an article in 'Mens Health' which said that it doesn't matter whether you eat before you sleep or not, what matters is the total calories you consume during the day. So what does OT say? I'm basically trying to gain some muscle really so sometimes before I sleep I eat a tuna sandwich which has around 30g of protein.. but will the carbo's that i consume put on the wrong sort of weight for me?

It doesn't matter. I eat a lot before going to bed, I still lose weight.

just eat. 24/7.

*gasp*Men's Health was actually right for once

It doesn't matter....To any parts of your body except the parts that get acid reflux.

just wondering because this is what I heard, but doesn't your metabolism slow down gradually throughout the day...and just a whole shitload more towards nighttime and when you're going to bed? ie...sleeping not saying it stops, but it won't digest the food nearly as efficiently?

I depends what you want to do as well. If your trying to lose weight you shouldn't eat 3 hours b4 you go to bed. I just got out of a Physiological Science class in school with a professor who is a Dr. of Physiological Science and it has been found that eating 3 hours before you go to bed will hurt your weight loss goals. Not trying to go against what you guys are saying, thats just what I was told. If you are bulking, however, eating right before you go to bed won't hurt.

One reason I've heard of a reason not to eat before bed is that it may blunt the body's natural secretion of HGH.

christophers your professor is a fucking moron and is 100% wrong. ask him the following: how does your body physiologically hindered by eating before bed? what is the physiological process in which the body forms adipose tissue in the absent of calories? metabolic slowdown towarsd the end of the day is 100% irrelevant when you acknowledge the simple fact that when the body notices it's in a deficit it will pull from fat. then ask: why was there a study done on female soccer players who ate right before bed and lost more fat than the group who didn't eat right before bed? there was more muscle tissue spared with a meal before bed as opposed to not, more lbm retained = more fat loss the problem with most professors is they are 100% not current on research. in fact they are very far behind. this is why most nutrition based classes are hilarity at it's best. This doesn't even contradict HGH release. The HGH released by not eating may be optimized but in the long run still insignificant especially when compared to the muscle preserved by eating.

christophers yeah and training high reps with low rest periods will increase GH, so why dont you do that? because the miniscule amount is irrelevant No arguement there. See my previous post. Again a matter of the disadvantages (in this case of highreps but supposed fat burning) compared to the advantages of lower reps and hypertrophy and maintenance of muscle mass.

What would happen though if we take two slightly overweight twins.. Their normal daily caloric requirement 2500 calories. One ate 2000 calories. 300 of those calories at 10pm. Another ate 2100 calories. Last meal at 8pm. Any difference in results? Short term or long term?

I always have a shake before bed with 2% milk to get some extra casien protein. Lately ive been drinking 2 scoops muscle milk with 12oz 2% milk, keeps me anabolic overnight ;-)

I only know I sleep better with something in my stomach.

timberwolf I only know I sleep better with something in my stomach. yeah same here. I feel more energized in the morning too

don't you still need energy while you sleep?

the way I look at it is... how many hours between meals.... and yes, that also includes the gap between the last meal before going to bed and the first meal when you get up in the morning... so suppose your last meal was 6pm and you go to bed at 10pm... there's already a 4 hour gap... then you sleep for say.... 8 hours.... and get up at 6am.... and eat right away.... that's a 12 hour gap!!!! Remember, ther's only 24 hours in a day... which leaves only (another) 12 hours to squeeze in 5 to 6 meals??? A 10 to 12 hour gap between meals... is too much.... even if it's sleep time....

Interesting responses..

WHAT do you all eat before bed? protein/fat combo?

t3nchi WHAT do you all eat before bed? protein/fat combo? Like a sandwich or something.. with tuna salad a little salad dressing... i used to sometimes eat fast food just before bed.. now i know that MUST be bad?

I usually have cookies and milk and doritos before bed

cottage cheese

t3nchi WHAT do you all eat before bed? protein/fat combo? mostly protein... personally, I like to keep my carbs earlier in the day... and taper off.... to minimal or none....

It matters with regards to developing acid reflex/esphagitis.

I take a scoop of ON whey + 1.5tbsp of flaxseed oil before bed along with 500mg calcium/mag and 1g vitamin C

for the last meal i avoid food that sticks to my teeth, like doritos.

Flexibility

Flexibility

Recently, I have been hitting my legs hard, on leg days. Now I am having trouble stretching. I can normally palm the ground behind my heels; but now, it's a bit more painful for me to palm the ground in front of my toes. (The pain is behind the knee.) I have been:- Squating - Doing leg curls - Doing leg extentions - Doing Caf raises Is this tauntness due to my increased attention given to my legs than before?

Anyone else get headaches after working out?

Anyone else get headaches after working out?

I made a thread about this a while ago, but I can't find it so I'll make a new one. Everytime I work out, I get a headache about an hour or so afterwards. It's not a really bad headache, but being someone who rarely gets headaches, it's annoying. Does this happen to anyone else? FYI: I drink plenty of water before my workout and try to replace exactly how much I lose through sweat. Edit: It doesn't seem to matter how hard I workout. Tonight I ran 1.5 miles at 5.5mph, then did some inclined dumbbell presses with 25lb weights just as a light "getting back into working out" workout. Edit:I've solved my problem It turns out it was nutrition related. Here's what I changed: - I now make sure I eat something 45-60 mintues before my workout; I normally eat a banana and a sandwich. - I eat a banana in the morning - I take a multivitamin - I drink gatorade after my workout (to replace sodium/sugar) - I eat a small meal no later than 60 minutes after my workout followed by another small meal 30-45 minutes later - I make sure to drink a lot of water throughout the day I'm not sure what exactly fixed it, but I don't care. I feel more energized before, during and after my workouts and I feel better in general. I'm still having a head CT scan done just to be safe, but other than that, .

Blood pressure.

Ilyusha Blood pressure. You know...I originally thought the same thing a few months ago, so I took my blood pressure when I started to experience the headaches...122/78 on average.

hootpie You know...I originally thought the same thing a few months ago, so I took my blood pressure when I started to experience the headaches...122/78 on average. Take it before and immediately after your workouts.

Ilyusha Take it before and immediately after your workouts. I'll do that. What should I look for? Normal before and high after? I just took it 3x and I averaged 135/83. Edit: And what should I do to deal with it? Also, thanks for helping me out, these headaches are really starting to bother me.

Also, thanks for helping me out, these headaches are really starting to bother me. Well you should take maybe a 2 week log of pre and post workout readings, as well as off day readings, and take your findings to a doctor (schedule an appt ahead of time, etc.). Make sure you visit a doctor, as this can be just about anything, but blood pressure would be my first guess. If you have a family history of a multitude of things, such as heart problems, kidney problems, migraines, general headaches, etc. it could be a reason for your headaches. So take some readings and go to a doctor and take it from there... By the way, your blood pressure is above normal.

Everyone in my family has high blood pressure, but no heart/kidney problems. Nobody in any part of my family has problems with headaches/migraines. I know it's above normal, which is weird. This is the first time I've taken it and it has been high. The other times I had headaches it was never this high.

Basically every day for 2 weeks, while making sure to mark what time the readings were taken and if you were at the gym or not. A history of high blood pressure can contribute to your elevated blood pressure. I have what is known as white coat hypertension - whenever I have my blood pressure measured at a hospital, it is elevated. Whenever it is measured at home, or anywhere else but a hospital/clinic, it's normal. Pretty lame, but that's the way it is for me..

Whenever it is measured at home, or anywhere else but a hospital/clinic, it's normal. Pretty lame, but that's the way it is for me.. That's totally understandable (the white coat hypertension). I have spoken to my doctor about this and he thinks it's nothing, but I think I'm going to have him order a CT scan of my head and possibly an MRI/MRA (whatever the thing is that looks at the blood vessels within your brain). One thing I have noticed is a vein in my right temple that was either never there, or never noticable before I started working out again a few months ago. I can feel my heartbeat in this vein in my temple all of the time and it pounds really hard while I'm exercising. Maybe I just have increased bloodflow to my head?

my brother had similar things happen to him. He used to run a lot, he did two marathons but ended up with bad headaches afterwards, one time even going to the hospital. Then he started noticing his heart race and headaches after normal everyday runs. Then, he would notice his heart racing doing menial household chores around his house. It took the news of a major league baseball players death in his 30's of a heart attack for him to see a doctor. A couple actually because the first one said everything was fine. It turns out he had a birth defect in his heart where he was born with a small hole between the chambers in the heart. Usually, if they don't catch this within 6 months of birth, it will be a huge problem at about 40 or 50. Because he ran so much and stressed his body, it made the hole bigger and blood was passing through, this meant one half of his heart had to pump harder than the rest and was considerably bigger. Luckily his body is still young and he had to have open heart surgery. The doctors closed up the hole and now he's better than new. Moral of the story, it might not be your head at all.

Wow...I certainly hope that's not the case for me. I'm glad everything turned out ok with him. I'm actually on hold right now waiting to speak with my doctor. I'm going to ask him to have all the necessary tests run.

Anyone else?

I worked out again today (around 5:30pm) for about an hour. I did some shoulder exercises today using the "high weight, low rep" method. I was doing fine for the majority of my workout and never really felt as though I was going to get a headache. I did take one tylenol before the workout, so that might be why. About 3 hours after my workout I started to get a headache again. The headaches are usually preceeded by a pulsating in my head, which lasts from before the headache to well after. I've checked my blood pressure throughout the day and it's been around 130/80 all the time. My doctor is scheduling a CT scan for me, so we can see if there's something going on in my head. I sure hope not .

What helped me with migranes/headaches in general was to drink a lot more water.

kingrukus What helped me with migranes/headaches in general was to drink a lot more water. How much were you drinking and how much more did you add? Right now I drink about 4 water bottles a day (16.9oz each). I'll usually drink one or two in the morning/afternoon, one during my workout (to replace water I lose), and one or two after that.

Whenever I went to a chiropractor for neck problems, I started getting headaches during the workouts. Usually chest workouts or any pushing motion. Somehow it just worked itself out I guess.

hootpie How much were you drinking and how much more did you add? Right now I drink about 4 water bottles a day (16.9oz each). I'll usually drink one or two in the morning/afternoon, one during my workout (to replace water I lose), and one or two after that. I was hardly drinking any water...about 2 500ml bottles a day (1L)...i stepped up to about 8 500ml bottles (4L) and that helped things.

I'll try increasing my water intake on days that I workout because I do tend to sweat a lot. I'll see if that helps. I don't think it's an issue of dehydration because my urine is always clear.

I've been doing a lot of reading and came up with some things that others might find useful (especially if they search for this in the future). Post-exercise headaches are sometimes called "exertional headaches" and can be caused by nothing more than blood pressure rising/intracranial pressure increasing. It can also be caused by a lack of sodium in the body and/or dehydration. Of course, the headaches could also be the sign of something else, so it's always best to consult a physician to be safe. Apparently the best way to fight these types of headaches are to stay hydrated very well and eat within 1 hour after your exercise. It helps to eat something with sodium in it after your workout as well (i.e. crackers). A combination of carbs, sodium, protein and water post-workout is the best. I'm guessing something like tuna-fish spread over saltine crackers would work best. I'm going to try this myself to see if it gets rid of these headaches I've been getting. If not, I'm going to go see a neurologist to make sure nothing is wrong. I'll update this thread for anyone who is interested.

gaining weight & eating question

Im eating as much as i possibly can. 5 to 6 times a day with snacks and such. I usually feel like i cant move after every meal. I am also eating clean and healthy. Now in the past couple months that i have been eating so much i have gained maybe 5lbs. I know eating is the only way to get bigger, but am i doing something wrong? Any negative effects of eating so much?

btw im about 6-7% bf at 140lbs now, 20yrs old

you are not eating enough

go_duke21 you are not eating enough i feel bad putting so much food in my body as is. I sit and eat as much as my friend who weights 260lbs and eats "a lot"

how tall are you

Opi how tall are you 5'10 - 140lbs skinny but its not that bad

Now in the past couple months that i have been eating so much i have gained maybe 5lbs. I know eating is the only way to get bigger, but am i doing something wrong? Any negative effects of eating so much? Don't worry too much about eating clean and healthy, if you want to put on weight just EAT. Try eating foods that are more calorie-dense if you feel like you get full too quickly. Make shakes. You can easily make a 1000 calorie shake and down it in 30 seconds. Most importantly, if what you're doing now isn't working..change what you are doing.

tell us what you eat in a typical day.

MikeTheVike1 tell us what you eat in a typical day. werd...

6-7 bf? Is that accurate or are you estimating?

breakfast usually eggs or cereal or oats, then the rest of the time im always eating sandwhiches or chicken/beef with rice/veggies. Ill have a smoothie like once every other day or so. But the bulk of what i eat is like food i make. Doesnt sound like much but its 5-6 big meals. I easily get 1-2x my body weight in protein from foods i eat.

Socrates 6-7 bf? Is that accurate or are you estimating? I was like 6 point something last time i got checked a few months ago. Im gonna go tomm and get tested again (calipers).

So you're going to have to eat more.

Chris3G that's good but even 2x your BW in protein is only 1100 calories. You say you're eating a lot but you also say you're not gaining. So you're going to have to eat more. could you explain the relation? For instance ill have a cup of orange juice thats 100 callories yet 0 or 1g of protein.

amdspitfire could you explain the relation? For instance ill have a cup of orange juice thats 100 callories yet 0 or 1g of protein. sure, 1g protein = 4 cals, 1g carb = 4 cals, 1g fat = 9 cals the calories in OJ are mostly from carbs.
